Grief is a healthy, human response to situations such as:
  • The death of a loved one.
  • Separation or divorce.
  • Miscarriage.
  • The loss of a job, property, or pet.
  • Children leaving home.

The greatest loss one usually experiences, is the death of a loved one. Although grief is painful, the pain will eventually subside. Time ill heal, not completely, but somewhat.

To overcome grief, it helps to understand it. You must face the reality of it, and deal with your feelings. These feelings may include fear, loneliness, helplessness, and despair. You must learn to recover and grow, so you can be a stronger person. Accepting your loss is vital in the healing process.
There are several feelings, that most people experience while grieving:
  • Shock and Denial
Your first reaction may be to deny your loss, pretend it hasn't happened, become apathetic.
  • Anger
Your loss may seem unfair. You may be angry with yourself or others. You may feel that they could have prevented the loss.
  • Guilt
It is normal for you to blame yourself for a loss. Maybe you did something, or didn't to something prior to the loss. There are things that we just can't prevent, or undo, no matter how much we want to or how hard we try. We are only human after all.
  • Depression
You may feel as if there is no hope. As though all the energy has been drained from your body. You may loose interest in all that was once beautiful and wonderful to you.
  • Loneliness
Your responsibilities may now increase. This may cause you to become lonely or even afraid.
Although these feelings do occur, there is one last feeling we get, eventually; Hope.

Although we may not want to do much of anything, we must take care of both our emotional, and physical needs.

Emotional Needs

Express your feelings
Don't hold negative feelings in. Let them out.

Accept Help
If someone offers you help, support, or comfort, accept it, don't turn it away.

Ask For Help
Most of the time, relatives and friends want to help you, but don't know how. Seek professional help, a counselor.

Be Kind to Yourself

Make sure you don't make any major desicions at this time while you are in such a delicate state of mind, you may regret this later on.

Physical Needs

Get Plenty of Rest
Right now, you need all the energy you can get. Make sure you get enough sleep. If you can't sleep well at night, try taking small naps during the day.

Stay Healthy
Eat right. Make sure you follow the food pyramid as well as possible. Exercise regularly, but don't overwork yourself.

Be alert For Problems
Stay alert for problems, such as headaches, dizzieness, nausea, heartburn, weight loss, shortness of breath, a lack of energy, and difficulty sleeping.
